...every time you do a good deed...

“every time you do a good deed you shine the light a little farther into the dark.
and the thing is,
when you're gone that light is going to keep shining on,
pushing the shadows back.”
 ~Charles de Lint~

a soft.
subtle shadow.
holy winter storm batman.
for the first time.
in five years.
we were without power.
many, many years ago.
dad put a line in for a gas stove.
the power was always out when i was a child.
so the stove came in handy for cooking.
i washed dishes yesterday.
by melting snow on the stove.
and we had a fire in the fireplace.
while the wind gust and the snow fell.
i was happy, fed and warm.
i counted my blessings.
when the power was out.
and i counted them again.
when it came back on.
there is always something to be grateful for.
as things could always be worse.
just BE.
robin.

Cozy and warm inside whilst the winterstorm blasted outside. It is truly a blessing to be able to have done all those things while waiting for the storm to pass. And, how wonderful that you celebrated that moment. I know it will be a cherished memory for you.
Have a blessed and merry Christmas!

One reason why I like to live in a flat - I would go nuts without power! :)

What a glorious beard Santa parades! Wonderful profile! And your words today are so very thoughtful and beautiful! We need to value what we have.
Happiest Christmas to you Robin!

Such a beautiful quote and it is so true. It is nice to be reminded to do good things for others...there is nothing that can compare to how your heart feels when you reach out to others. Thank you for sharing this and blessings to you and your family for Christmas.

Oh my, truer words were never spoken.

"There is always something to be grateful for as things could always be worse."

We live about 18-19 miles from the school massacre. My colleagues have been there for over a week.

I've covered two beautiful candlelight vigils, a workshop for educators and parents on how to talk to your children about such unimaginable horror, and a somber bell ringing in a downpour yesterday.

Not complaining, mind you. Just wanted to agree with you that there is always something for which we can be grateful.

I hope you and yours have a blessed Christmas.

Yes, we modern persons can complain about such insignificant things - yet prior to Edison's discovery, there were blessings to people who chose to see the positive in everyday life without complaint...we are thankful for receiving Jesus as the ultimate present so we are grateful to receive at this time of year! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

(although you were happy when the power returned - as would we all :)

It always amazes me when the power goes out, how much we depend on electricity. It happens fairly regularly out here in the country.

We do have a fireplace and gas, so we can cook and stay warm. But there's no water, as the well pump is electric. It can be a peaceful, quiet interlude - if it doesn't last TOO long.
